Jacksonville Zoo - The Jacksonville Zoological Park is located on Heckscher Drive on the North side of Jacksonville and has an extensive collection of animals, birds and reptiles. The zoo features a lion habitat, Petting Zoo, African Veldt with boardwalk, river cruises, rides, gift shops, and much more.
Kingsley Plantation -The oldest plantation still in existence in Florida is located on Heckscher drive just north of the Mayport ferry. Now a National Park Service historic site, the location includes the
plantation house, which has ranger guided programs.
Fort Caroline National Memorial - Fort Caroline on the banks of the St. Johns River was settled by the French Huguenots in 1564 and is the site of the first Protestant colony in the New World. The 130 acre memorial is located in East Arlington off Fort Caroline Road. It features a replica of the original fort, a museum with French and Indian artifacts and several nature trails.
World Class Golf - The PGA Tour picked the Jacksonville Area as the location for its headquarters. This should be an indication of the quality golfing available in the area. From the TPC course located in Sawgrass to the many other public, private and semi-private courses in
the area, Jacksonville is definitely a city that is serious about its golf - visit Jacksonville Beach Golf Course.
Deep Sea Fishing - Catch a marlin, kingfish, or any number of species in one of the many available charter or party fishing boats that prowl the coast off Jacksonville. Freshwater Fishing
- Whether you are looking for that 10+ pound bass for your wall or if you just want to catch a couple of catfish for dinner, the Jacksonville area offers unbelievable freshwater fishing. It truly is a fisherman's dream.
St. Augustine -The nations oldest city offers many attractions. The Alligator Farm,
the Fountain of Youth, Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, the Lightner Museum and the St. Augustine
Sightseeing Train are just a few of the attractions in this wonderful city.
Mayport Naval Station - Home of many of the nations' biggest warships. It is not uncommon to see an aircraft carrier off the beach of Pelican Path Bed and Breakfast.
Jacksonville Jaguars - One of the premier NFL
football teams (best in our opinion), is located in Jacksonville. The Jaguars are hungry for their first Super Bowl victory. Tickets are scarce but not impossible to find
Jacksonville Beach Pier - At 1,320 feet, the new pier is 303 feet longer than its predecessor
which was 997 feet in length and approximately 16 feet wide.The new pier, which is handicapped accessible, features a 20-foot wide wooden deck, several fish cleaning stations, a concession area, bait shop, and restrooms. The wooden deck area branches into a 48 x 31-foot terminal T-platform at the seaward end. Limited to 3 fishing rods per fisherman, carts may be used to transport tackle on the pier. Hours of operation 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. initially, these hours may be adjusted at a later date.
Cradle Creek Preserve - The park is situated between Plantation Oaks and Marshside
subdivisions, near the Intracoastal between Beach and Butler boulevards. Visitors can experience the natural setting through a system of nature trails, elevated boardwalks, an observation platform overlooking Pablo Creek Estuary and a canoe/kayak pier that can be accessed at high tide.
Dutton Island Preserve - Dutton Island Preserve is a city park with a canoe launch and fishing piers out in the marsh on the east side of the ICW just north of the Atlantic Blvd bridge. To the north is De Blieu Creek and the other creeks accessible from Oak Harbor. South of the launch is Kestner Creek. Both Kestner and De Blieu empty into the ICW and are relatively protected and are populated with oyster beds, grass, and flats. Dutton Island can also be used as a launch to reach locations just south of the Atlantic Blvd bridge such as Hogpen Creek and Hopkins Creek. If you are traveling that far south from Dutton make sure you account for tides in your paddle plan. Also beware rip currents around the pilings at the bridge.
Beaches Historical Museum - Learn the history of Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Mayport, Neptune Beach, Palm Valley, and Ponte Vedra Beach.
Hanna Park - Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, encompassing 450 acres on the sandy shores of
the Atlantic Ocean, is located about 17 miles east of Jacksonville - just south of Mayport Naval Station. The park has 1.5 miles of sandy beach and is noted for its fine surfing at an area known as "The Poles" located at the extreme southern end of the Mayport Naval Station Beach. The original "poles" long ago succumbed to the vagaries of the sea but have recently [June, 2004) been rebuilt in a limited fashion.
Guana Reserve - Visitors to Guana River will find incredible wildlife. Over 230 bird species
have been recorded at the Reserve. Many live here year-round while many others enlist the site as a resting spot during spring and fall migrations. The waters of Guana Lake contain both freshwater and saltwater fish, as well as shrimp, crabs, and more. Scenic vistas of interior freshwater marshes as well as salt marshes, tidal creeks and estuaries await those who seek the more peaceful aspects of a visit. |
